On the 26th of June 2020, Botho University (BU) through the Student Alumni Affairs Department (SAAD) donated Food Hampers to 61 less-privileged people at Gakgatla Village as a relief from the COVID 19 Pandemic. The Food Hamper project is a Botho University initiative by the Students and Alumni Affairs Department (SAAD) to support Gakgatla Village which was adopted by BU in 2017.
The event was graced by Kgosi Lenyetse Moshapa and other Gakgatla Dikgosi, VDC Chairperson, Ms Kolane (Teacher), committee members and the students from Gakgatla Primary School. BU followed the COVID 19 protocols of washing hands, sanitising, putting on masks and social distancing.
Botho University was represented by staff members, Dean of Office of Staff, Students and Outreach (OSSO) Mr Mosoma Kgotla, Team Leader Mr C. Matsapa and Coordinator of Community Engagement Ms J. D. Seeletso who handed over the hampers which included 5kg Maize Meal, 5 Kg Sorghum Meal, 5 Kg Sugar, 2 litre Sunflower Oil, 500grams Five Roses, Rooibos 2kg, 6 bar Lifebuoy Soap and 2Kg Washing Powder to those that attended the event. The dean Mr Mosoma Kgotla briefly talked about BU and Gakgatla relationship where he reminded the audience that how the University has come a long way dating back as far as 2017 though he acknowledged that both have many years to complete the tasks that are set. He reiterated that BU has held events at Gakgatla Village in partnership with some stakeholders including government and non-governmental organizations and he assured that such activities will continue.
