Botho University graduated its first cohort of students in Maseru on Friday, 21st February 2020 at a glittering ceremony held at Avani Lesotho.
This follows after the successful completion of four and a half years of hard work of the 18 students who took the podium on the day graduating. Five students graduated in BSc (Hons) in Health Information Management (H.I.M), one in BSc (Hons) in Business Management, six in BSc (Hons) in Accounting and six in BSc (Hons) in Computing.
The ceremony saw Makubakube Matsoso walk away with the best student award sponsored by Standard Lesotho Bank and the Lesotho Institute of Accountants. This was indeed a milestone achieved.
Botho University is a Huawei academy and as a result five students who participated in the national Huawei competitions in Lesotho were awarded Certificates and Gifts by the Vice Chancellor of Botho University, Dr. Sheela Raja Ram and a Huawei representative Mr. Bhekimuzi Thankslord Bhembe.
The Dean and Head of Campus for Maseru Campus, Dr. Abhishek Ranjan highlighted the importance of the day as it marks the first graduation ceremony on the campus.
It is also a day of joy for both the institution and the graduates and that the students must reflect on their journey and in so doing take a moment to thank all the support system that they have enjoyed during their stay at Botho University.
On the other hand, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the students and their parents in their achievements and also thanked the ministers for gracing the graduation. The Ministers of Education & Training and Development Planning; Mr. Francis Mokoto Hloaele and Tlohelang Aumane respectively.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the university graduates students for the future especially in this era of the fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and that graduates need to be ahead of the curb and keep learning as this will help them to remain relevant at all times.
The Minister of Education and Training, as the Chief Guest, also began by congratulating both the students and the parents. The Minister proceeded to highlight that the university has subjected itself to the African Quality Rating Mechanism (AQRM) under the Association of African Universities and such it was rated satisfactory and also the University is an BOS ISO 9001:2015 certified organization.
The University won the SADC Quality Awards (SQA) in the Small and Medium Category in 2018. He continued to mention that the institution is cautious of the fact that not every graduate will be employed hence the mandatory Entrepreneurial module for every student.
The PVC Academics and Quality, Dr. Ivy Rose Matthews capped the graduates while the Minister of Development Planning had the honor to present scrolls to graduates.
The Ceremony was attended by Captains of industry, Principal Secretaries, Chief Executives, Heads and most importantly parents as well as BU Choir, drama and Heads of Departments from both the Public and Private sector.
Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa who is the member of the Botho University Advisory Council took the stage with a speech to put a conclusion to this well planned and attended inaugural graduation ceremony for Maseru Campus.
